There follows an extract from the magazine LAMP AND LIGHT issued for the months January and February 2014. It is published by the Christian Charity:

Each year a calendar is published giving the Hebrew dates of the Jewish Festivals. These dates are based upon the phases of the moon and therefore differ  each year from those of the Gregorian Calendar.  Some Festivals have been introduced after the conclusion of the Hebrew Scriptures.

When Esther came before the king he commanded by letters that Haman’s wicked device, which he devised against the Jews should return upon his own head and that he and his sons should be hanged upon the gallows. Wherefore they called these days Purim after the name of Pur.

In the tenth day of Abib they shall take to them every man a lamb according to the house of their fathers and you shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening. And they shall take of the blood and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses…….and you shall eat it with your .loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste: it is the Lord’s Passover.

In the fifth month on the seventh day which is the nineteenth year of king Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, came Nebuzar-adan captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, unto Jerusalem: and he burnt the house of the Lord,……..And all the army of the Chaldees which were with the captain of the guard, brake down the walls of Jerusalem round about.
